Ruby name comes from ruber, Latin for red. The color of a ruby is due to the element chromium and it’s a variety of the mineral corundum (like Sapphire). It’s from Trigonal system and crystallise in Hexagonal red crystals. These crystals can be cutted in slices or faceted in different shapes.
It has a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale and it’s considered one of the four precious stones, together with Sapphire, Emerald and Diamond. Rubies have historically been mined in Birmania, Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, Tailandia, Brasil, Colombia, China, and Russia.
Many cultures have long considered ruby a stone of kings. Not surprisingly, ruby symbolism and lore have many associations with power, wealth, and their protection. Possessing a ruby purportedly benefited and protected the owner’s estates and assisted in the accumulation of wealth.
When worn as a talisman, ruby’s mystical properties extended to personal protection. To own a ruby gives you contentment and peace and if you place it under a pillow it ward you off bad dreams. So, if you want a gem to increase your wealth, impress your rivals, and protect yourself from harm, the legends point to ruby.
