L'ònix és una varietat de Calcedònia composat d’Òxid de Silici, amb bandes blanques i negres. El Sardònix és una varietat amb bandes vermelles i marrons alternades amb bandes negres o blanques.
El seu nom prové del llatí i del grec antic ὄνυξ (ònix), que significa "urpa" o "ungla". Era molt apreciat a l'antiguitat pels grecs i els romans, pobles que ens han llegat gran quantitat de peces elaborades amb aquest material. És una pedra que s'ha utilitzat per a gemmes gravades en calcografia i camafeus de pedra dura, on les bandes fan que la imatge contrasti amb el terra.
