L'Astrofil·lita és un mineral molt rar de la classe dels silicats (inosilicat) de diversos metalls com potassi, sodi, manganès, ferro i titani. Es cristal·litza amb cristalls de fulla fina que, de vegades, mostren un agregat en forma d’estrella. Va ser descobert originalment el 1844 a Laven Island, Noruega, per Paul Christian Weibye. Després d’això, no se li va donar la benvinguda oficial a la comunitat científica fins deu anys després, quan Carl Johan August Theodor Scheerer el va anomenar oficialment “Astrofil·lita”. El seu nom fa referència a les seves característiques físiques, així com a les paraules gregues "Astron" i "Phyllon", que signifiquen "estrella" i "fulla". L’astrofil·lita només es pot trobar en alguns països de tot el món però la majoria provenen de Rússia, Groenlàndia, Xina, Noruega i els Estats Units.

Astrophyllite is a very rare potassium, iron, titanium, manganese, sodium, silicate mineral. It crystallizes in the form of fine-bladed crystals that sometimes display a “starburst” aggregate. It was originally discovered in 1844 in Laven Island, Norway by Paul Christian Weibye. After that, it wasn’t officially welcomed into the scientific community until 10 years later, when Carl Johan August Theodor Scheerer officially named it “Astrophyllite”. He chose this in reference to its physical characteristics as well as the Greek words “Astron” and “Phyllon”, meaning “star” and “leaf”. Astrophyllite can only be found in a few countries worldwide, with the majority of specimens coming out of Russia, Greenland, China, Norway, and the United States.
